Oneiros posted a link to this article and I felt moved to post something here about it. (Mostly because his site doesn’t allow comments )
He was enraged by the text, stating “Orson Scott Card has earned my undying hatred and contempt for being a homophobe and a bigot. ”
I have to admit that on my first reading of the original article, I was there too. I was almost moved to tears by the thought that one of my favorite authors could be such a person, spreading hatred and intolerance.
However, after reading and re-reading the entire thing through I think I misunderstood what Mr Card was trying to say.
He is saying that the Mormon faith, which he is a member of, decrees homosexuality a sin. This is definitely true. He furthermore states that he does not believe that someone who is homosexual can be a “True Mormon” in the same sense that I don’t believe that catholic priests that bugger the choir boys are “true Catholics” He goes on to say “I cannot see individual homosexuals, in or out of my books, as anything other than human beings with as complex a combination of good and evil in them as I find within myself.”
The Church of Latter Day Saints is a real bitch.
That being said, I want it clear that I do object to the thinking here, and be assured that it is a very strong objection. I do not personally believe homosexuality to be a sin. I don’t even believe it is a choice that people make, so I could not believe it to be a sin to follow your own nature.
I do not respect him for his views, I just don’t hate him for them.
(And I totally love Oneiros! *mwah*)
